Start: 9:00 a.m.
Elevation/Distance: 3000’+/- climb, 3.5 to 4 miles one way
Directions to Start: From Sisters, take Hwy 242 West to FS Road 1018 (to Scott Pass TH about 1 mile past Cold Spring CG). Head south on 1018 Road and if possible take 1040 Road up to the west until we get stopped by snow.
Bend Carpool: Meet at ODOT DMV (old Welcome Center Parking Lot) at 8:00AM. Sisters Carpool: Meet at Sisters Coffee Company at 8:30AM
Outing Description: We’ll drive the network of logging roads on the east side of Black Crater as high as we can get, then strap on our gear and head up the east side. We’ll skirt along the south side of the lower bowl and head up towards the summit (7251’). Once on top, there is some pretty steep skiing in the upper bowl (both bowls are actually glacial cirques and not craters). The south side has some more moderate skiing with great views of the North Sister. We can drop into the lower bowl and skin past Black Crater Lake or continue down the southeast side back to our starting point.
Equipment & Clothing Needs: Normal winter day outing clothing, food and liquids. Backcountry skis and skins, split snowboards and skins, snowshoes or backcountry Nordic skis are options. We may have to pack skis/boards, snowshoes for a half mile or so depending on the snow. Skiers who plan to ski the bowl must have beacons, probes and shovels and know how to use them.
Skills, Experience & Fitness Level Needed: Some experience with snowshoes, skiing is easy to expert depending on the route you take down. Need to be reasonably fit.
Maximum # of Participants & RSVP Requirements: Limit of 12.
