04 Jan 2017 Year in Review
2017 was a year of climbing, learning, skiing and community engagement. The Cascades Mountaineers traveled across forests, deserts, snow-covered slopes and lava fields. We took field trips to Mt. Shasta, Mt. Rainier and the Painted Hills. Back in Bend, we met for indoor rock climbing at the Bend Rock Gym, hosted several social get-togethers and shared stories with Boldly Went.
It was an excellent snow year in Central Oregon. In January, we hosted a moderate snowshoe to Vista Butte, a backcountry ski trip up Brown Mountain and a campout on Tumalo Mountain. There was also an igloo-building class and a well-attended presentation by Leif Whittaker. February saw a ski/snowshoe trip to Hayrick Butte and ascents of Black Butte and Paulina Peak. Due to the high avalanche risk on Mt. Shasta, that climb had to be cancelled. March saw a snow skills class at Cone Peak, a ski to Lake Helen on Mt. Shasta and a knot-tying clinic.
Snow lingered in the mountains well into spring. In April, we climbed Mt. Hood, skied Potato Hill and Broken Hand, adventured in the Ochocos and hosted a natural anchor building workshop. We also participated in the annual Smith Rock Spring Thing. In May, we summitted Mt. Hood, made a run at Mt. Shasta and climbed Middle Sister. There was a crevasse rescue class in preparation for this year’s Mt. Rainier climb.
In June the weather threatened to actually bring us some summer. There was a self-rescue practice session at Skeleton Cave prior to a successful Rainier summit the following week. The annual summer gathering was held at Meadow Camp, with climbing, BBQ and beverages for all. Other outings included Tumalo Mountain, Union Peak and Mt. Scott. In July, the climbing ramped up with ascents of Three Fingered Jack, Broken Top and Mt. Jefferson. Plus, a hike up Black Crater for conditioning and views, a couple of beginner-friendly rock climbing outings and a social gathering along the river.
We mostly shuttered indoors for August due to the wildfire smoke that blanketed much of Oregon. Meanwhile we sneaked in two climbs: Diamond Peak and Mt. Bailey. We also partnered with Boldly Went for an evening of adventure storytelling. In September we hit the rocks with a Smith Rock climbing trip and the Craggin’ Classic. In October, we hiked out to Diablo Peak on a day that felt a lot like summer.
In November, the Cascades Mountaineers camped out in the Badlands and snowshoed up Paulina Peak. The year ended with two events in December: a Tumalo Mountain moonlight snowshoe and the CM holiday party at Riverbend Brewing. In addition, we hosted a climb night at the Bend Rock Gym almost every month of the year! It’s a great opportunity to connect with other members and start dreaming up some plans for adventures outside the gym.
